Designing the Blog: Introduction
When I started this site back in May this year, I had only a vague idea of the way in which I wanted it to work and look, and how I saw visitors interacting with it; both opinions largely formed from my experience visiting other design and standards-related blogs.
More recently, however, I have begun to feel that this site doesn’t do my aspirations (and growing ‘To Do’ list) justice. Add to this a feeling (one in which I am not alone) that many blogs are starting to look the same, and furthermore that the argument “but this layout just works” is heard far too often, and I finally feel ready to examine and explore the aims of this site to achieve a redesign of which I can feel proud.
This series of articles will, over the course of the next 10 chapters, look at the various elements that go into making up a website. I will be borrowing heavily from Jesse James Garrett’s article/diagram The Elements of User Experience (PDF, 17KB), a highly recommended building block for anyone considering site (re)design or development.
My hope is that as well as giving me the opportunity to write down and fully examine my thought processes as the development goes on, I will gain some valuable feedback during the course of the project, and also perhaps even help a couple of people going through the same process.
