Postcard from Stressville

Sep 16 2004

Has it really been almost three weeks since my last post?

It’s been a rather stressful few weeks – a combination of job stuff (more on this later) and a long overdue holiday. Due to a terminal case of leaving-everything-to-the-last-minute, we didn’t get to spend our few days away in a peaceful cottage, but in a cramped hotel room, with three small children, directly under the Heathrow flight path.

We managed to have a great time anyway, visiting London Zoo on Saturday and then Legoland on the Sunday. Our eldest daughter is a member of Tumbletots, and they had put on a special day in honour of their 25th birthday – we received tickets for the show, featuring Noddy, Bob the Builder and several other sweaty people in giant suits.

Legoland Windsor was great, and is highly recommended for anyone with children of any age – there are activities and rides for kids from toddlers up to teenagers, and it’s certainly large enough to spend a full day there. The only negative point (and it’s one that I guess the park shares with most other tourist attractions) is that the food available is horrifically over-priced – we paid £15 for two burger meals! We’ll definitely be taking our own food next time.

London Zoo wasn’t bad, although there’s always an element of sadness that these animals are caged for our enjoyment. The elephants have been moved to Whipsnade, but Alice was happy enough with the giraffes, camels and snakes. The insect house was disappointing, with only a handful of exhibits to be viewed through grubby little portholes.

I’ve put up a selection of photos from the trip (together with a simple Javascript photo album scroller script; feel free to use it if you want).
