Blogging with anticipation

Aug 13 2004

Like most bloggers with a technical bent, I use a blog aggregator to alert me to new posts on those blogs I subscribe to.

As the list grows, I find – perhaps not surprisingly – that seeing some of the entries highlighted, “1 new post”, is more exhilarating than others.

“Excellent”, I think, “a new entry by Dunstan – I can’t wait to read it.”

On the other hand, there are some blogs – even quite big hitters – that, while I am obviously still interested enough to subscribe to, just do not do it for me as often as I would like. Whether it’s posting frequency, low signal-noise ratio (from the point of view of what I would like to read about), or something else, I don’t know.

My favourites? Airbag, Dunstan’s Blog, Stuff and Nonsense, Authentic Boredom, sidesh0w and Whitespace. There’s just something about the quality of writing, and even more than that the character of the author shining through, that gives them the edge.

Which blogs do you look forward to being updated the most?

I know what you mean about the technical stuff. I include Meyer.web and mezzoblue on my feedreader and I like to read what’s going on with design and standards etc. but I don’t feel qualified enough to get involved with the arguement. I can only recall actually leaving 1 comment on mezzoblue which was when he changed the site layout. He does have some interesting links there as well.

At the moment one of my favourite blogs is Root’s “at the 404” mostly, I think, because we’re on roughly the same level technically and he does have a habit of courting controversy. Gets quite heated at times!

It’s not so much the technical level of discussion and discourse that takes place on blogs like Meyerweb, but more that I just don’t feel as much of a connection with what he’s writing about as I do with the others I listed.
