Refresh Cambridge October: Subversion
The first Refresh of the new term (since we use the university as a venue, the year feels like it starts in September) featured an interesting look at version control and Subversion by Juan Delgado: What I Know About SVN. It’s ideal for beginners or those using Subversion without really understanding it, and there is a huge, detailed PDF available on the site that has more information and tons of useful links.
Juan is an evangelist for SVN use by creatives—it’s not just for coders, you can just as easily keep your graphics and documentation under version control and make your life easier. I have to admit that I’m guilty of ignoring the benefits of VC as a solo freelancer; however, I plan to remedy that shortly—MediaTemple offer SVN on their servers, so in theory I should have no trouble creating a repository online, and checking out from that for live sites (rather than using FTP to release changes, something Juan strongly advised against).
We also talked briefly about virtualisation options (a topic that may be revisited at a future Refresh evening), and looked at the Dropbox remote-sync solution, and Elgg, an open-source social network package.

Never heard of SVN before, but the introduction given at the link is very, very interessant.
