February Refresh: Productivity

Feb 07 2008

Last night was the first Refresh Cambridge event of the new year, and an enjoyable couple of hours was spent discussing the topic of Productivity.

Here are some of the tools and sites that members recommended:

We also discussed Google Apps for managing company email, and bemoaned the lack of a solution to synchronise database alterations between development and live servers.

sorry I missed this one, sounds like we are using similar tools to those suggested in the meeting.

We use Zend Studio for Eclipse (basically Eclipse PDT) for programming with Subversion for version control on all web projects (programming-based and static HTML). I cannot recommend version control enough for those of you who don’t yet use it. We use Trac to visually browse repositories online – http://trac.edgewall.org/

Basecamp is the order of the day for our project management, though we also have an Intranet where we store client data and key project info (currently coded in PHP Cake, but planning to migrate to Zend Framework).

I did look at Google Apps for mail, but just didn’t like the idea of all our company mail being on Google’s server and being analysed by them. So we went with an office mailserver running Kerio.

Support issue tracking is also as important to us – we currently use FogBugz on UNIX which is one of the more usable systems I’ve found – http://www.fogcreek.com/fogbugz/

It isn’t perfect, but it’s better than relying on mail. As Matthew mentioned, perhaps I can do a short talk on support issue tracking for the future.

Hello all,

Have you seen beta.wrkspc.com? seems like a good tool to me.

I am quite liking netbeans ide with php plugin at the moment, I was simply using notpad++ before I started with netbeans. Does anyone know of a php plugin for visual studio?

I use Filezilla for ftp. works well for me.

I would like to come to a meeting some time. by the way Im a fan of symfony over ZF.

cheers
