Not as crap as we used to be

Jul 14 2004

One of my less attractive character traits is a habit of picking apart TV adverts to point out inconsistencies, off-message flubs and other general crapness. Recently, the target of my ire has been BT, who have launched a campaign to highlight their customer service.

Note – not ‘good’ customer service; just ‘customer service’. Period. As in “we used to not give a toss about our customers, but look at us now!”

The first ad drove home the point with the simple message that “if you book an appointment with us, the engineer will actually turn up”. What a ground-breaking piece of blue-sky thinking that is – I wonder why more companies don’t choose to advertise that they practice COMMON COURTESY. Oh, yeah – because most people would think it a given that you’re going to turn up when you say you will.

Seems to me like yet another boardroom-inspired piece of advertising, where the money-men have decided that they can do a better job than the ad agency.

Uh – no, guys. Try again.

Link of the day

www.tumbledry.org (via) is Alexander Micek’s blog. It has a lovely muted colour scheme and nice type treatments, and he writes amusingly about life and Apple (what is it with all these Apple-obsessed bloggers at the moment?)

The navbar mouseovers are a nice touch, as are the ‘inspiration’ and ‘quotes’ sections of the site.

Note to self

Don’t compose blog entries in the actual admin panel – it’s far too easy to forget what you’re doing, check a link, and lose the last 15 minutes work…
