Rebooted!

May 01 2005

Well, here it is – The Watchmaker Project has been rebooted for 2005. As is the fashion among standards-based designers, it has a codename – this design is called “Golden” (first person to say why wins the respect of their peers and not a lot else).

It is by no means finished – as of right now (10am GMT) it is unchecked in any browser other than Firefox, and I know the layout breaks in larger resolutions – but I wanted to get it up so I can spend the rest of today fixing the outstanding problems. There is also a lot of unfinished areas – comments are not very well formatted, and I haven’t decided what to do with the sidebar on any page apart from the homepage.

Edit: There also seems to be an intermittent problem with the display of the sIFR-replaced headings on the homepage, with only the first one or two showing up. Re-exporting the Flash seemed to work, but then it broke again. If anyone has any ideas on why this might be happening, I’d appreciate any advice.

Update: After reading some of the posts on the sIFR support forum, I tried reinstalling Flash Player which seems to have fixed the problem.

If you haven’t already, head over to the official CSS Reboot site after about 1pm today (9am EST) to see the revised front page turn into a thumbnail frenzy!

I’ll probably post a more detailed entry about the redesign process soon – in the meantime, have a look at my other rebooted site, 29digital design studio.

Update: I’ve just realised that I meant to go back through my old entries and create excerpts for them all – apologies if some of the homepage entries are a little cryptic!

:D Thank you for the big links.

I like it. A nice spin on the two columns for the entry page, and yeah, the nav eh :)

Two columned glory, but glorious in a different sense.

That Navigation is nifty too.

Not so keen on the Flash headings for everything. Aside from the search engine optimisation thing, Adblock pops up little tabs all over the page and ruins the look.

Chris: Hopefully the use of sIFR to handle the Flash headings means that the SEO won’t be affected (not that that is a prime concern for this site anyway).

However, I’ve just refreshed the homepage and all but the first entry heading have vanished – if anyone else encounters this problem, can they please let me know so I can see how widespread it is?

SteveC: We have a winner!

The ratio of the left/right columns, and the nav/page, are both 0.618 (the Golden Ratio).

I thought about it while building my blog, which features the golden ratio quite a bit

Well I’ve never heard of the “Golden Ratio”. Do I get a prize for that? All I’m going to say is it looks bloody good. And I like the nav too. Sorted!
