Spanked by Google

Feb 21 2005

As you can see by these traffic statistics, The Watchmaker Project is currently undergoing what is known as The Google Dance within the SEO community, with page impressions climbing by a factor of 4 or 5 over the weekend:

Graph of website's traffic, showing a large peak in page impressions over the last two days

Browsing some search engine forums seems to suggest that this can either be a precursor to:

a) the site showing up a lot more frequently in Google searches; or

b) a change to the Google algorithm.

It’s also making my site stats look a bit silly – search bots now account for 60% of all visitors!

While looking for information, I came across SEO Chat, a site crammed with everything a webmaster is ever likely to need to know about getting your site listed by search engines. It’s got some great tools and articles, including how to select keywords, a keyword typo generator and a keyword density analysis tool. Good stuff.
